As the Year of Urban Ideas rolls on, we are moving to our next project: the City Builders Camp! It is fast approaching and we have a handful of spaces left for 14-17 year olds who are interested in the arts and city building. The camp will take place on four consecutive Fridays in September and October (September 12, 19, 26 and October 3). It is FREE and will be based in the Exchange District, at Artspace (100 Arthur Street). See www.urbanidea.ca/citybuilders for more information and application forms.

The camp will be a combination of field trips, lectures, and hands on learning. Each week we’ll focus on a different investigation, from architecture, to photography, to public space and public art, and finally to wayfinding and map-making.

Please forward this information on to students and teachers who might be interested. The deadline for registration is Thursday September 4, 2014.

Thanks to everyone who came out to take part in the Creative Placemaking Challenge on August 15. It was a great day and thousands of people were on hand to interact with the ten different installations and take part in the conversation about how the arts can animate underused spaces in the public realm.

You can find some pictures and media coverage from the day here, while our friends at Number TEN Architectural Group have created a short video about their installation, InterTWINE, which you can see here.

Local documentarian Mike Maryniuk is working on a film about the day, and we couldn’t be more excited to see his unique take on it. Mike’s work includes Cattle Call, winner of the Best Experimental Short Film at the South by Southwest Film Festival, Packing Up The Wagon, on the closing of Winnipeg’s iconic Wagon Wheel restaurant, and Death By Popcorn: the Tragedy of the Winnipeg Jets. The film is slated for completion in late 2014 and we will post details about the premiere through Urban Idea’s various media channels.

If you had a chance to attend, we’d certainly like to hear from you! If you have a minute, send us a note using the contact form on our website!
