Hello Art and City enthusiasts – we are half-way through the 2014 Year of Urban Ideas and things are really starting to heat up! We’ve got a couple of big announcements for you.

We are pleased to announce the application process for Urban Idea’s City Builders Camp! If you know a 14-17 year old who is interested in cities and the arts, please encourage them to apply.

City Builders will run on 4 consecutive Fridays in September and October and will introduce young people to cities and the role that art plays in their development through field trips, skill-building workshops, and hands-on instruction from artists, architects, and design professionals. Through a series of investigations, participants will learn about the history of the city & built form, how the city works, parks, public space, & public art, wayfinding, map making, and graphic design.

The Camp is FREE and lunch and snacks are included. We are partnering with PLATFORM centre for digital and photographic arts on this project. City Builders will be based in the Exchange District, but participants will explore many different areas of the city.

More information about City Builders, including a more detailed description of the program and how to apply can be found on our website.  Get your applications in soon as space is limited.

The Creative Placemaking Challenge deadline passed just over a week ago and we’re currently in the process of vetting the submissions.  The winners will be announced in a couple of weeks, and then the real fun begins! Selected entrants will receive up to $1,500 to bring their ideas into reality.

Ideas will be installed throughout the alleys and dray ways of the West Exchange District on Friday August 15 – please be sure and save the date to come down and check it out.  The Creative Placemaking Challenge is a design competition that asks people to re-imagine spaces in one of Winnipeg’s most distinctive neighbourhoods, drawing attention to the ways in which the arts can be the catalyst for transforming our city.
